Tips From a Construction Contractor on How to Install Baseboards

DIY Baseboard Installation

Baseboards are an important part of any home’s interior design. They can add style and texture to a room, as well as bring a bit of warmth into the space. However, if you’re like most people, you probably don’t know how to install baseboards yourself. Luckily for you, we have professionals who are dedicated enough to give you some helpful pointers starting with the basics. Here are some basic baseboard installation tips provided by a professional construction contractor:

Measuring the Baseboard and the Length of the Wall

Measure the width of your baseboard if you have one that is wider than it needs to be. Don’t worry about this too much as long as it’s not too wide and there is still room for a proper fit in between all four sides. Measure the length of the wall along which you will install the molding. Make sure that you have enough baseboards to cover this entire length of your wall, as well as any doorways or windows.

Cutting the Molding

Use a miter saw to cut the molding to length. You can also use a table saw if your project requires larger moldings, or if you want to cut it in half and have one piece fit both sides of your panel. If it’s just going on one side of the panel, then a circular saw will work fine as well. It is important to make sure that your cuts are perfectly square and straight for consistency.

Attaching Moldings Directly

Attach moldings directly to drywall with drywall screws, if baseboards are small enough that they do not need primary support from wall frame studs. Drill a pilot hole for each screw in the center of each board and then drive a screw into each board at the pilot hole location. Tighten all screws by hand until snug but not tight, then use an electric drill with appropriate bits to make sure no splinters remain.
